New to the Internet?

Welcome to Local Link!

These page are designed to help the new Internet user understand a few basic concepts about their Local Link Internet account.

O.K., First things first, YOUR USERNAME.
When you signed on to get on the Internet through Local Link, you chose a ' username '. This is the name you will use when you connect to the Internet.  In most cases it is not your real name. For example; Mr. Doe's real name may be John James Doe, but he has chosen his first two initials and last name for his username and gets -- ' jjdoe ' (notice that this is all in lowercase letters. They are almost never created in CAPS on Local Link system.). This is what he logs in as. Your username should be something unique to and means something only to you.

Your username is not your e-mail address. However, most of the time your email address does have the username in it, (i.e. jjdoe@LL.net). Do not try to connect to the Internet using your e-mail address, you must use your username only.

Now -- YOUR PASSWORD.
You also chose a password to go along with your username. This again should be something that means something only to you.  A good rule to follow is NOT to use birth dates, anniversary dates, bank account #'s etc. for the password. It should be something that only you would remember and should always be a combination of letters and numbers. As a reminder, DO NOT give out your password to anyone!

Common Program Terms

Client
This simply put is any PROGRAM that you run to achieve a specific purpose. Don't be afraid of this word.

Browser

This is the program that you run to look at the web pages.  The two most common browsers are Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Netscape's Navigator/Communicator.  More information browsers can be found here.

Email Client

This is the program that you run to look at the email that someone sends you or to send email to someone else. There a a lot of different clients out there on the web. Some of the most commonly used e-mail clients are Outlook 2000/Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape4x and Netscape6x.  Though they all may look different, and may have different functionality, but they all do the same thing with the same settings - they send and receive your email.

FTP Client

This is the program that you run when you wish to upload (send files to a remote computer) or download (receive files from a remote computer). This is the type of program that you use to upload your home page to Local Link's servers.

Chat Client

This is the program that you run to talk real time with someone else on the net.

Common Questions
Why can't I do anything on the Internet? Why can't I get my mail? Why can't I view a web page?
These are the most common questions we get asked. Most of the time the answer is the same. Somehow you did not actually get connected. If you are not connected, then the programs are not going to be able to do their job and they will return some sort of error message. If this happens, just start over. Make sure you have typed your username and/or password correctly. (see above).

If for some reason the connection does not go through, or it says you were disconnected from the computer that you called, or just dumps you out, then go back and check to see if the username or password are wrong . Sometimes they get corrupted by a program installation, or maybe someone else has tried to use your machine, or maybe you just hit two keys with one finger; these type of things happen to the best of us!. Retype them, making sure that you do not have the CAPS LOCK turned on on your keyboard, and try again.

If you get some other type of error message and are not able to resolve it, please give the Local Link support department a call. We are here to help you. Sometimes we may have to ask questions that may seem like odd or strange questions to you, but your answers will allow us to do our jobs more efficiently and be able to get to the root of your problem.

Try to remember to write down the error message before you call. This may aid greatly in finding the problem and getting you back online. And remember, ANY electronic component can break or quit. No matter how old it is!

Please see our Online Support pages for more answers to common problems and feel free to contact us at support@LL.net or 1-888-200-2120 if we can be of any help with your Local Link service questions.

Sincerely yours,
